How I check casino operators before you decide

I run Casinos Safety Guide as an independent guide for people in New Zealand who want to understand casino operators before they make a decision. My work is focused on the local market: what New Zealand rules do and do not cover, how offshore sites present themselves, and where the fine print can catch you out. I don’t treat an operator’s own claims as proof.
How I assess operators
I use the same checks for each assessment:
- Regulatory status: I look for a named regulator and verify any licensing claim against evidence from that regulator. If I can’t confirm it, I say so. A badge on a casino website isn’t enough.
- New Zealand relevance: I check whether the operator says it accepts New Zealand customers and whether its terms explain the rules that apply. Gambling at offshore sites is not protected by New Zealand gambling laws.
- Payments and withdrawals: I review the listed payment methods, fees, limits, processing times and identity checks. We do not promote casinos that state they allow bank transfers.
- Terms and transparency: I look at bonus conditions, withdrawal restrictions, account rules and how clearly the operator explains them.
- Games and support: I check what games are listed, whether software providers are identified, and what contact and complaint routes the operator offers.
I separate what I can verify from what the operator merely says. If important information is missing or contradictory, that affects the assessment. No score can remove the risks. That’s the point.
New Zealand rules matter here. The Department of Internal Affairs provides information on gambling regulation at dia.govt.nz, and the Gambling Commission is at gamblingcommission.govt.nz. Advertising online casino gambling services to people in New Zealand is restricted, including during the transition period; licensed operators face tight advertising rules, and sponsorships are prohibited. Casinos Safety Guide is an information site, not an invitation to gamble.
How the site is funded
Some links on Casinos Safety Guide are affiliate links. If you follow one and sign up or take another qualifying action, we may earn a commission. That does not change the criteria above, and payment does not guarantee a favourable assessment or a place on the site. We aim to make commercial links clear so you can tell when a referral may earn us money.
Keeping pages up to date
I revisit pages when an operator changes its terms, payment information, licensing claims or availability for New Zealand customers, and when relevant rules change. I correct material errors when they’re identified and update the assessment if the evidence changes. If a detail can’t be confirmed, I’d rather mark it as unclear than fill the gap with a guess.
